Vodafone Idea (Vi) is gearing up to roll out 5G services in India in the next six to seven months, a significant step in the competitive telecom landscape. However, it is a little behind as rival companies are already offering their 5G services across the country. According to the Economic Times, the announcement was made by Vi CEO Akshaya Moondra during the company’s third-quarter earnings conference, where she announced that she is currently in charge of rivals Airtel and Reliance Jio. He also hinted that revelations about the pricing of 5G plans were imminent. Here are the details:

Moondra stated, “We hope to launch 5G services within about six to seven months,” conveying Vi’s commitment to launching 5G services. However, specific details regarding Vi’s 5G deployment plans remain pending, subject to completion of ongoing funding initiatives. He revealed that the company is in discussions with technology partners to finalize the strategy for 5G deployment in the country.
However, it is worth mentioning that rivals Jio and Airtel are considerably ahead in the 5G race. Jio has already completed the rollout of 5G across the country, and Airtel aims to achieve the same by March 2024.
Additionally, Vi is taking strategic steps to streamline its services, including shutting down 3G services in key regions such as Maharashtra, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Mumbai, and Kolkata in Q3 2023. The company plans to phase out 3G services in other regions as well. Well, there are plans to completely shut down the 3G network by 2025.
Airtel and Jio 5G plan prices may be announced soon, Vi hints
On the prospects for 5G monetization, Moondra highlighted the significant investments made by Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel in 5G infrastructure. “There is already a lot of investment in 5G (by Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel) but monetization is yet to materialize, but monetization should be around the corner,” he said. This statement strongly hints that both Airtel and Reliance Jio may be about to announce the prices of their 5G plans, indicating that 5G services may not be offered for free in the near future. However, both companies have not officially confirmed these developments. Vi executives have just hinted that such an announcement should be imminent.
