Government’s Crypto Strategy Unveiled by White House Official
White House “Crypto Czar” David Sacks has provided insights into the US government’s approach to cryptocurrencies, clarifying President Donald Trump’s recent mention of Solana (SOL), Cardano (ADA), and XRP in relation to the US Digital Asset Stockpile.
Market Misinterpretation
Sacks dismissed the notion that Trump’s mention of these specific cryptocurrencies indicated any significant shift in strategy, emphasizing that the President simply referenced the top five cryptocurrencies by market cap.
Altcoin Audit Process
Sacks outlined the government’s plan to conduct an audit of its crypto holdings, focusing on identifying and segregating altcoins held by the authorities. These altcoins, excluding Bitcoin (BTC), will then be transferred to the Stockpile for safekeeping.
According to Sacks, the US currently holds approximately 200,000 BTC along with some Ethereum (ETH), although the full extent of their altcoin holdings remains uncertain.
Staking and Rebalancing
Secretary of the US Treasury, Scott Bessent, will oversee the altcoins in the Stockpile, ensuring responsible management and potentially engaging in staking activities or portfolio rebalancing.
Sacks elaborated, stating, “The Secretary of the Treasury and his team will be able to exercise portfolio management and responsible stewardship. And yes, that could include staking, it could include rebalancing, it could include sales.”
However, Sacks clarified that these actions will not extend to the Strategic Bitcoin Reserve, which comprises seized Bitcoin that is being held for long-term value preservation.
Highlighting the distinct objectives for the Reserve and the Stockpile, Sacks emphasized the US government’s view of Bitcoin as a scarce and strategic asset for long-term preservation.
Sacks noted, “The Bitcoin we want to keep long-term, so there is a difference there in objective. With the Reserve, the goal is the long-term preservation; with the Stockpile, the goal is responsible stewardship, portfolio management of assets.”
